Homemade Pickles

Pickled Onions     
I have only made this recipe twice however both times it was very successful.  I got the recipe from my Mother-in-Law who was brilliant in the kitchen.
  • Pickling Onions
  • Brown Vinegar (Preferably grape)
  • Salt
  • Pickling Spice
  • Sugar
  1. Peel all onions. 
  2. Pour boiling water over the peeled onions and leave for 5 mins.
  3. Remove from hot water and allow to stand in cold water to cool.
  4. Layer onions in bucket with lots of salt covering each layer and leave overnight.
  5. Next morning rinse onions.
  6. Place onions into bottles which can be sealed.
  7. Boil half vinegar and half water with a small amount of pickling spice and 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  8. Allow the boiled mixture to cool.
  9. Once cool pour over the onions in the bottles.
  10. Allow to stand for 3-4 weeks.


You can add a few bay leaves or even some chillies to the liquid mixture in the bottles.
